BIDEN CALLED ON THE GEORGIAN GOVERNMENT TO DIALOGUE WITH THE OPPOSITION
US President Joe Biden called on the Georgian government to engage in dialogue with the opposition and "restore election integrity" following the parliamentary elections in Georgia on October 26, whose results were not recognized by the opposition forces.
According to "European Pravda," the White House cited Biden's statement.
The American president expressed "deep concern" over Georgia’s retreat from democracy, particularly due to the adoption of legislation that is "a mirror reflection of Russian laws, restricting fundamental freedoms and narrowing the space for independent civil society organizations."
"The recent parliamentary elections in Georgia on October 26 were marred by numerous documented abuses of administrative resources, as well as voter intimidation and coercion," he noted.
Biden urged the Georgian government to transparently investigate all election violations, repeal laws that restrict freedom of assembly and expression, and "initiate an immediate inclusive dialogue with all political forces in Georgia regarding the restoration of election integrity."
"We urge all parties to strictly uphold the rule of law and fundamental freedoms, which remain the foundation for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic future," the US president concluded.
It was reported that opposition parties do not recognize the results of the parliamentary elections, claiming that "Georgian Dream" had "stolen" them. The opposition called for protests.
On the eve of a major protest in Tbilisi, the Georgian opposition announced demands, including the holding of repeat elections..
